Local authorities are increasingly requesting wind microclimate studies for tall building developments. Combining our extensive experience in wind engineering consulting with Ansys’ unique flow modelling software, we can help you develop inhouse capabilities for both early stage design and formal CFD-based assessment for planning applications.
Early Stage Qualitative Desk Studies
An Environmental Impact Assessment based around wind tunnel tests or computer simulations (CFD) is often too late in the process to allow significant changes to be implemented. However, a detailed wind assessment at the start of RIBA stage 2, when alternative massing options are still being considered, is often deemed irrelevant, premature and the evaluation of many design variants too expensive.
A desk wind study is therefore often undertaken at an early stage to highlight any major issues with proposed design options, allowing more thorough evaluation at later steps within the development process.
This study considers seasonal variations in wind conditions and surrounding townscapes to predict resulting wind flow. Traditionally, these predictions were based on experience and basic calculations only for speed and cost reasons. However, Ansys’ instant flow and visualisation capabilities within its Ansys Discovery products now makes it possible to supplement and inform desk studies with easy, quick computer-derived flow simulation results.
With ANSYS Discovery, architects and consultants are able to bring early-stage wind studies in-house, enhance submissions to planning authorities and generate ideas among stakeholders based around live evaluations of alternatives and exploration of “what-ifs”.
Quantitative CFD Wind Studies
For detailed assessment of wind flow around buildings, including assessment with Lawson Critieria in accordance to planning authority guidelines, highly accurate CFD software is required with flexible meshing capabilities and the ability to minimise solution times through parallel processing.
Ansys CFD is a proven simulation solution, used by wind consultants across the world, with an initutive interface, extensive scripting functionality and powerful post-processing for high quality results visualisation.
Wilde Analysis can supply you with the appropriate Ansys CFD software and customised training to help you develop efficient workflows compatiable with the needs of the built environment industry.
