Dodd Engineering Ltd was in the process of developing a vehicle carrier. The company needed to substantiate their proposed design of the carrier’s front and rear lifting legs under operating conditions. They approached Wilde Analysis in order to achieve this through the use of FEA techniques.
Company
Dodd Engineering Ltd specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of a wide variety of bespoke materials handling equipment.
Solution
The analysis showed that stresses in the tube, whilst lifting a vehicle, were excessive. Under these loads it was predicted that the tube would experience material yielding (material goes plastic).
To prevent this from happening, Wilde recommended that the wall thickness of the tube was increased from 5mm to 10mm. This confirmed Dodd’s own calculations.
Wilde’s ANSYS consultancy services had been recommended to us by another company. This was therefore the first time that we had used them and we were very satisfied with their work for us. They enabled us to meet our main objective, which was to provide independent clarification on our own calculations. Everything was done to the agreed timescale, and we were very happy with the level of communication.
