Rolls-Royce & Wilde Host Unique Modelling Tool Seminar

A half-day seminar demonstrating a new manufacturing simulation technology developed by Wilde Analysis Ltd, in conjunction with Rolls-Royce and the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham.

Event Details

Start Date/Time25 Aug 13:30
End Date/Time25 Aug 17:00

Background

Wilde Analysis Ltd, in conjunction with Rolls-Royce and the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham, has developed an integrated modelling environment that efficiently links finite element based simulations of discrete manufacturing operations together to predict material properties and other characteristics. This information can then be used within product design-based analysis tools to obtain a more accurate understanding of how manufacture affects final performance.

PROMOTE

The new modelling environment is the result of a three and a half year project called PROMOTE (Process Modelling for Tomorrow’s Engines), partially funded by the Technology Strategy Board.
PROMOTE has focused on optimising the manufacture of aerospace gas turbine discs and shafts at Rolls-Royce by creating a tool that is easily accessible to their engineers while exploiting the highly advanced DEFORM metal forming simulation solver developed by SFTC (Scientific Forming Technologies Corporation).

The technology behind this environment is now available for the first time to other UK based companies and can be customised to help streamline the analysis of their own unique manufacturing processes. Either DEFORM or existing process modelling software can potentially be used as the simulation engine.

PROMOTE is the first application of the environment to enable non-specialists to undertake advanced simulations without the requirement for extensive training. Within a single environment, Rolls-Royce engineers can predict the development of the product, including microstructure, distortion and residual stress and strain, through solution heat treatment and quench, ageing, machining, inertia welding, post-weld machining and final heat treatment.

Benefits from Attending

Delegates attending the event will learn how and why the software was developed and the experience gained in implementing this modelling capability within Rolls-Royce. There will also be an opportunity to discuss with the developers what benefits the methodology and environment could provide to the simulation of other manufacturing operations.

Venue

Rolls-Royce, Derby
